the Staten Island Chess Club is the site to some of
the best chess on the Island-and has been for over
118 years. We meet every Wednesday from 7:00

at 184 Decker Avenue (entrance on Catherine Street.)
Established in 1890 our club is one of New York’s
oldest. Our former members include one U.S.
champion, one U.S. amateur champion, and a five
time U.S. blind champion.
Come and check us out
we are always looking for players and new members.
All levels and ages are welcome.
At the Staten Island Chess Club you can always find
a partner to play a casual game of chess. You
will also find many of our members playing blitz,
rapid, and slow chess. Whatever you like-you can always
find a game. We provide everything boards,
clocks, score sheets, and most of all a friendly
atmosphere. Our members range in age from 10
to 70 years old with playing strength between
absolute beginner and expert. We offer free
one-on-one lessons to beginners and intermediate
players. Our members also routinely give
lectures on many topics – openings, tactics, and
endgame.
As an official
affiliate of the United States Chess Federation our
club also hosts numerous tournaments throughout the
year both USCF and Club rated. We offer cash
prizes, trophies, and medals to many of the top
players. Our members participate in the annual
club championships, several memorial tournaments,
rapid tourneys, and the senior Olympics.
At the Staten Island
Chess Club it is free to play. If you want to
be a member of our club we charge only $5.00 a
month to help cover expenses. As a member you are entitled to
participate in the annual club championships,
receive reduced entry fees for tournaments, and
participate in sponsored club versus club matches.
