The Staten
Island Chess Club, the New York City
Public Library, and the Greenbelt Recreation
Center have teamed up and are
proudly offering free chess lessons to
the children, teens, and adults of Staten
Island. Class is led by Club Secretary
Lou Fraser with participation by parents and
members of the Staten Island Chess Club.
More lessons are also being
offered on Sundays for beginner,
intermediate, and advance levels through the
School Plus Program, a student enrichment
program geared towards student between the
ages of 5 and 15. Class is led by
senior instructor Ed Selling with
participation from members of the Staten
Island Chess Club. Classes are held at the College
of Staten Island - Bldg 2N Room 114.
Lou Fraser, a
long time member of the Staten Island Chess
Club, and seasoned chess instructor will
teach children 5 years and older how to play
chess. Lou not only
teaches his students the rules of play but
also teaches them the finer points of chess.
Lou focuses on the other important aspect of
the game-good sportsmanship. He
teaches our children how to win with
humility and lose with dignity.
Lou instills a
love of the
game to the students
he teaches.
His aims are to give each child a solid
foundation in chess so they can enjoy “the
game of kings and the king of games” for the
rest of their lives.
