A.B. Hodges
started playing chess at 20 years old and
won the U.S. Chess Championship at age 33
when he defeated Jackson Showalter 5 to 3
with 1 draw. Because of business
pressure Hodges did not defend his title and
retired it in 1896. For a period that
spanned over 6 decades Hodges was the only
American Master to have played 5 world chess
champions - Alekhine, Capablanca, Lasker,
Steinitz, and Zukertort.
