Albert B. Hodges

  U.S. Chess Champion
1894-1896

Founder and first president of the Staten Island Chess Club.

A.B. Hodges started playing chess at 20 years old and won the U.S. Chess Championship at age 33 when he defeated Jackson Showalter 5 to 3 with 1 draw.  Because of business pressure Hodges did not defend his title and retired it in 1896.  For a period that spanned over 6 decades Hodges was the only American Master to have played 5 world chess champions - Alekhine, Capablanca, Lasker, Steinitz, and Zukertort.
